• “When you push off from the dock … we’re all in the same boat.
This isn’t about cancer anymore. It’s about exercise and health and the rest of your life.
When we push off we’re paddling away from breast cancer.”

    - Dr. Don McKenzie, Founder, Abreast In A Boat
  • “Life isn’t about waiting for the storm to pass. It’s about learning to dance in the rain!”

    - Vivian Greene
  • “Be kinder than necessary, for everyone you meet is fighting some kind of battle.”

    - T.H. Thompson & John Watson
  • “I learned that courage was not the absence of fear, but the triumph over it.
The brave man is not he who does not feel afraid, but he who conquers that fear.’

    - Nelson Mandela

Canada Commemorative Magazine

Our team first took to the water in April 2006 giving us just 4 months to prepare and take part in the memorable 1st World Championships for Breast Cancer Survivors in Singapore. The amaBele Belles team was founded as a result of a promise Pam Newby made to Adelaide’s Dragons Abreast, Canada’s Abreast in a Boat and Singapore’s coach John Edwards many years ago that she would start a team in Cape Town.

The amaBele (the Xhosa word for breasts in South Africa) Belles is the only BCS team in South Africa and in fact on the African continent.

Our floating support group strives to encourage and inspire all women facing the challenges of breast cancer to lead an active and vibrant life after diagnosis.

We feel privileged to be representing all African women when we travel to Peterborough in June 2010 and look forward to “celebrating life” with more than 70 teams at another memorable event!
